Get The Facts: Union Negotiations

University of Toronto – Scarborough

March 27, 2017

To our Valued Customers:

SUBJECT: Aramark Food Services at University of Toronto Scarborough

As you know, Aramark Canada Employees represented by Unite Here Local 75, exercised their right to strike on February 9, 2017. While we have made every effort to provide you with the best service and food selection possible, we recognize that this may not meet the level that you are accustomed to, and for this we apologize. We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks for your patience and understanding during the past few weeks and provide you with some information regarding this situation.

Our collective agreement with Unite Here, Local 75, expired several months ago. After many meetings with the Union’s negotiating committee, we presented our final offer for settlement on March 14, 2017. To be clear, these negotiations are between Aramark Canada and the Union and does not involve the University of Toronto Scarborough.  We believe that this was a very generous and fair proposal that should have resolved this labour dispute.

  • A wage increase of almost 10% in the first year, almost 20% in the first 2 years
  • Achieving a minimum $15/hour wage within 12 months
  • Expanded Company paid comprehensive benefit coverage (including part time employee eligibility)

It is important to note that this offer was in many respects better than the one that was recently accepted by Aramark’s employees at York University, which according to Unite Here Local 75’s press release, was described as “groundbreaking”. Unfortunately, this offer has been twice rejected by Aramark employees at UTSC.

Much to our disappointment, following a Ministry of Labour supervised vote, the Union has advised us that their strike will continue.

We will continue to do everything possible to provide food services on your campus to the best of our ability and in accordance with our high food service standards. While we may not agree with the decision to reject this offer, we respect and abide by all provisions of the Ministry of Labour, the collective bargaining process and the Union’s rights.

We thank you for your patience and allowing us the opportunity to share with you the details surrounding this situation, and once again want you to know that we sincerely appreciate your understanding and continued patronage.
